Southington announces leaf collection schedule

SOUTHINGTON — Town crews will begin the annual residential leaf collection at the end of the month.

The Town Council and Public Works Commission awarded contracts to several town companies for the leaf removal early last month. The collection schedule was outlined in a press release from the highway department.

Town crews will be doing “spot” collections in areas of town with heavy leaf accumulations starting Oct. 29. Regular service will begin the week after. Residents must pile leaves on the curb for collection.

The town asks that the piles do not include grass clippings, dead flowers/plants/shrubs, sticks, brush, or rocks. Town Engineer Annette Turnquist said leaf piles that contain any of these materials will not be collected because they will damage equipment.

Zone 1, which is south of West Center Street and west of Route 10, will be the first where leaves will be collected. Residents should have piles out no later than the morning of Nov. 5.

Zone 2, which is south of Berlin Street and east of Route 10, will be the second zone where leaves will be collected. Residents should have piles out no later than the morning of Nov. 12.

Zone 3, which is north of Berlin Street and east of Route 10, will be the third where leaves will be collected. Residents should have piles out no later than the morning of Nov. 19.

Zone 4, which is north of West Center Street and west of Route 10, will be the last zone where leaves will be collected. Residents should have piles out no later than the morning of Nov. 26.

An additional pick up will occur for Zone 1 beginning the morning of Dec. 3.
