SOUTHINGTON— The left lane of Interstate 84 east was closed for a period Monday night after a vehicle with a flat tire rolled into an embankment and its occupant fled, according to police.

Police initially alerted residents in the Milldale area of their search for the driver, and various reports claimed the man was armed. However, Meriden police say the man is not suspected to be armed and is not known to be dangerous.

Meriden authorities are still working to identify and find the man in the Southington area. It is not known why the driver fled, police said.

The man was driving on I-84 with a flat tire that caused him to swerve off the interstate and into an embankment, Meriden police said.

Around 7:15 p.m., traffic cameras showed crews removing a vehicle from the highway median. The vehicle became disabled after passing Exit 30 around 6:30 p.m.
