Southington man charged with punching officer following incident at motel

SOUTHINGTON — A local man faces charges after police said he punched an officer following an incident at a motel on Sunday.

James McCool, 52, of 710 Old Turnpike Road, was charged Sunday with assault on an officer, third-degree assault, interfering with an officer and breach of peace.

An employee at Motel 6, 625 Queen St., reported a guest that had been asked to leave was being belligerent and disrespectful, police spokesman Lt. Stephen Elliott said.

Police transported McCool from the hotel, but discovered he left some items in the cruiser. When the officer drove back to deliver the items, McCool punched the officer in the face, Elliot said.  After a brief struggle, McCool was taken into custody. The officer and McCool reported minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

McCool posted $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on June 24.
