SOUTHINGTON — A local man faces charges after police said he left his two children alone in a car last week.

Karl Luberda, 38, of 580 West St., was charged on Aug. 22 with two counts each of risk of injury to a minor and unsupervised children under 12 years old.

On Aug. 22, police responded to Spring Lake Village for a report of two children alone inside a car, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz. Officers found the car and a 4-year-old and 1-year-old inside. The car was not running, the doors were locked and the windows were rolled up, Dobratz said.

Luberda, a real estate agent, returned to the car about a minute before police arrived and told officers he was showing a home, Dobratz said. Police noted the temperature outside was 84 degrees, with a dew point of 69 degrees, and officers estimated the children were in the car for about 20 minutes.

The children did not appear to be in medical distress and were taken home by their mother, Dobratz said.

Luberda was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on Sept. 4.
