SOUTHINGTON — Firefighters are participating in the annual Fill the Boot campaign throughout the summer.
Firefighters were out on West Center Street and Bristol Street on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.
Firefighter Dan Comen said the money raised goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
“The 2019 Fill the Boot events will help support MDA's programs of worldwide research, specialized health care services, and day-to-day support – which includes sending children affected by muscular dystrophy to a week-long, barrier-free MDA summer camp at Camp Hemlocks in Hebron, CT,” Comen said in a statement.
In May, two members of the local firefighters union attended the annual MDA boot camp and received awards for the department’s efforts in 2018, which included collecting close to $11,000.
“It’s something they are used to every year...they are expecting us,” Comen said of the response to the collections. “It’s a really great cause and we raise a lot of money for the size of department we are.”
Additional Fill the Boot events are scheduled for Aug. 2 and Aug. 30. The International Association of Firefighters has raised over $600 million for MDA to date.
