Southington student faces discipline after drawing swastika on school grounds

SOUTHINGTON — A student is facing discipline after drawing a swastika on a Southington High School sidewalk with spray deodorant.

According to a letter from School Superintendent Tim Connellan, the student was waiting to be picked up following an after-school activity. After drawing the swastika with a can of spray deodorant borrowed from a friend, the student tried to wipe it away but left when a family member arrived.

Connellan said the image was drawn on Tuesday and found Wednesday morning. A review of security camera footage identified the student, who was then interviewed about the drawing.

“The student was assigned immediate consequences as the first step in the disciplinary process. The incident continues to be under further review with additional disciplinary consequences under consideration,” Connellan wrote in the letter to parents. The school district doesn’t comment on discipline issues involving students.

The student admitted drawing the swastika and said he thought it was “funny.”

“As a community, we do not think of actions such as these as ‘funny.’ They are in fact deplorable and these symbols of hatred have no place in our public schools,” Connellan wrote.

He said the school district’s Coalition for Social Justice would be consulted on the incident. The coalition of school officials, teachers, parents and students was formed by the superintendent following a video posted last year in which a white high school student threatened black classmates.

Some coalition meetings have been led by the State Education Resource Center and focused on racism, inclusion and similar topics.

Following the video’s posting, parents and students spoke at Board of Education meetings about race-based bullying and the lack of minority teachers and school leaders in Southington.
