SOUTHINGTON — Local and state officials are investigating after a fire broke out at Mamma Mia Restaurant Tuesday night.

The fire was reported just after 10 p.m. at Mamma Mia Restaurant, 1765 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, Battalion Chief Eric Heath said. Crews arrived and found fire coming from a rear exhaust vent and heavy smoke inside and outside the business. Crews extinguished the fire in about an hour and there were no injuries, Heath stated.

There was significant damage to the interior of the restaurant and Health said it will be closed for awhile. Inspectors from the building and health departments will be called to the scene to evaluate the damage, Health said.

The local fire marshal is investigating with assistance from the state fire marshal, Heath said.
