SOUTHINGTON — Through three decades of serving fried chicken, the Hen House is still using the same recipe it started with in 1988.
“I appreciate all the customers coming in,” said owner Ronald Amorando. “If it wasn’t for the customers, we wouldn’t be here.”
The Main Street restaurant celebrated the start of its 30th year with a discount and a raffle for gift cards. Amorando also hopes to host a car show when the weather improves, something he has done in past years to benefit the Sunshine Kids, a charity for children with cancer.
“A lot of places aren’t around that long,” he said, noting that he’s seen young employees grow up and bring their own children to the restaurant. “It feels like an accomplishment ... you know you’re doing something right.”
Amorando, who moved to Southington six months after opening Hen House, attributes his success to the food he serves.
“We got voted best fried chicken for a reason,” said Amorando, referencing Connecticut Magazine naming it the best friend chicken restaurant in the state in 2017.
“It’s good chicken that is seasoned well,” said customer Mavis Parker, of Cromwell.
Charles Parker, another customer, said the chicken is consistently crispy, not oily, and cooked evenly.
