Prohibition-theme restaurant planned in Southington

SOUTHINGTON — A Prohibition era-themed restaurant called The Manhattan is slated for the former 3D Restaurant and Bar location on Eden Avenue.

Diane Mulholland submitted a zoning permit and liquor application for 16 Eden Ave. late last month. She and husband Rob Sitz are planning 1920’s decor.

“We’re going to have a baby grand, there’s going to be Prohibition style for the waitresses and bartenders,” Mulholland said.

The Manhattan will offer appetizers, tapas and drinks. Mulholland said they’re focusing on Italian, Spanish and Latin food and drinks and consistently excellent service.

The 3D Restaurant opened earlier this year. Owners Darryl DeSorbo and Bill Edgerly had planned a restaurant and tattoo studio concept, which they said is popular on the West Coast. The tattoo studio never opened and the space was incorporated into the restaurant, which closed in April.

Restaurants have come and gone at the location in recent years. Greers & Beers closed in February 2018 after less than a year in business. It was an offshoot of the popular Greer's Chicken stand in Bristol. Lynn Harvest Pub opened at the Eden Avenue location in 2013, replacing Spice Bar and Grill.

DeSorbo did major renovations to the building before opening. He said earlier this year that he signed a 12-year lease for the location.

Town records show that Kai Dong owns the property at 16 Eden Ave. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.

Mulholland and Sitz are new to the restaurant industry but have careers in management. Sitz will be the restaurant manager.

“We’ve always wanted to do a restaurant bar,” Mulholland said.

The couple had tried to be buy the building seven years ago, but the owner wasn't interested. They're now leasing the space.

Matt Reimondo, the town’s zoning enforcement officer, said the permits were submitted on July 30. The zoning permit is in process and the alcohol permit is scheduled for consideration by the Zoning Board of Appeals at its meeting on Aug. 27.
