SOUTHINGTON — The Board of Fire Commissioners expects to hire a new assistant fire chief in the coming weeks.

Mike Bunko, commission chairman, hopes the board can conduct interviews and make a decision at its Sept. 20 meeting.

The position was only posted internally. New Fire Chief Richard Butler came from outside the department.

“Going inside is definitely the best course of action,” Butler said, adding someone from inside the department will have institutional knowledge that he does not yet possess.

Bunko said the board is looking for a candidate that has served as a senior command officer, has a vision and work ethic, and can assist in various administrative tasks, including budgeting and policy formulation.

The assistant chief would also serve as fire marshal and oversee the fire inspection bureau.

Bunko said Butler’s input “is going to be absolutely critical” in the process, as the assistant chief will be Butler’s second in command. The chief will be part of the hiring process, although the board will serve as the final hiring committee.

“We’ve got outstanding people in this organization… I can’t go wrong with somebody being promoted from within the organization,” Butler said.

The position was last held by Thomas Russell Wisner, who retired in June after serving as interim chief.
