Markley wins GOP nomination for lieutenant governor

Sen. Joe Markley has secured the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, according to the Associated Press. 

The AP declared the race for Markley, who had a comfortable lead in the three-way primary, around 10:40 p.m. 

Markley, of Southington, beat out New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. 

According to Secretary of the State Denise W. Merill’s online reporting system, Markley had 48.16 percent of the vote at the time the AP called the race, with 146 of 163 towns reporting. He had a lead of more than 16,000 votes over Stewart, who was in second place.
