First significant snowfall of season forecast for Thursday

Between 3 and 6 inches of snow and sleet could accumulate in the area from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Gary Lessor, meteorologist with the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, said snow and sleet will fall from the early Thursday afternoon through midnight before changing over to freezing rain.

Lessor said about .15 inches of ice could accumulate.

“It’s not extreme, but it is enough to make conditions slippery, difficult to travel,” he said.

The state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection advised motorists to drive slowly.

“The Thursday evening commute will be impacted,” the National Weather Service said in a statement. “Hazardous travel is possible.”

Below-normal temperatures are also forecast through Thanksgiving.
