Campaign targets use of drug, alcohol by teens

The Durham Middlefield Local Wellness Coalition under Durham Middlefield Youth & Family Services launched the Together We Stand campaign recently. The campaign aims to empower adults, parents and the community at large to stand between teens and underage drinking.

According to a 2017 student survey, 60 percent of Durham and Middlefield middle and high school students reported alcohol was the easiest substance to access.

There are many risks associated with teen alcohol and drug use. Underage substance use can cause negative consequences such as car accidents, personal injury, and in some cases, addiction.

The human brain is not fully developed until a person reaches their mid-20s. Alcohol and drugs can damage the brain’s wiring, increasing the likelihood of learning difficulties and health problems in adulthood.
