DURHAM — The seniors won Coginchaug Regional High School’s powder puff game on Nov. 30, a comeback from last year’s defeat as juniors. The final score was 28-26.
The annual girls flag football game pits a team of seniors against a team of juniors. Rain last week postponed the game, originally scheduled for Nov. 22.
Senior team coach Kevin Cross said the seniors lost last year as juniors in a “very close game.”
”We’re looking even better than last year,” Cross said as the players warmed up.
Senior quarterback Ginny Benbow scored three touchdowns with a 2-point conversion, and running back Julia Filliault scored one touchdown. Junior quarterback Juliana DeFilio scored three touchdowns, and running backs Shannon Carey and Alison Durand each scored once.
Cross said the juniors came out of halftime with a trick play, with DeFilio running 70 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 12. Ginny Benbow had three 50-plus yard runs that put the seniors on top, he said.
“The senior defense made an impressive stop at their own 30-yard line with one minute to go in the game to seal the deal for the seniors,” he said.
The school pep band provided entertainment for a crowd of about 250 spectators.
