Coginchaug girls to play for state championship

The Coginchaug girls basketball team is back in the CIAC Class S state finals.

The No. 9 seed, Coginchaug edged No. 20 Weaver 67-62 Monday night to earn a spot in the Class S title game.

The Blue Devils will face No. 10 SMSA this weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena. Game day and time has yet to be determined.

Fans flock to Uncasville for the title tilts. Last year’s finals drew more than 18,000 spectators, and the New London-Trumbull girls Class LL championship game pulled in a crowd of 8,186; a record for girls high school basketball in our state. (New London prevailed in a close one, 42-36).

Coginchaug has been on the big stage before. The Blue Devils claimed the Class S state title in 2012.

This time around, Coginchaug bested No. 24 Tourtellotte, 66-30, in the opening round of the Class S tournament, and No. 8 Bolton, 56-30, in Round 2.

That propelled the Blue Devils into the quarterfinals, where they took down No. 17 Wamogo, 64-28, to set up their Final Four matchup with Weaver,
