Meriden driver charged with manslaughter in death of bicyclist in Wallingford

WALLINGFORD — A driver faces manslaughter and DUI charges after hitting and killing a bicyclist Saturday on South Turnpike Road. The collision occurred shortly before 3 p.m. north of Toelles Road near the North Haven town line.

The bicyclist Donald A. Carrelli, 37, of Milford, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Derek C. Fries, 35, of Meriden was charged with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, DUI, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Fries was driving a gray 2009 Honda Civic sedan southbound on South Turnpike Road when the vehicle crossed the double yellow center line, traveled across the northbound travel lane and struck one of two northbound bicyclists riding along the right hand shoulder. Police say he remained at the scene of the incident until their arrival and was cooperative.

Several witnesses at the scene “not only provided first aid, but also information about the offending vehicle’s actions prior to striking the bicyclist,” according to police. Fries was released on $25,000 bond. He’s due in Meriden Superior Court on June 7.

South Turnpike Road was closed for several hours as police investigated. Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to call Officer James Knowlton at 203-294-2818 or Lt. Anthony DeMaio at 203-294-2838.
