WALLINGFORD — New England Dive will hold a grand opening at its new location next weekend.

The business, which has been in town for 30 years, moved from a “little colonial house” on North Colony Road late last year to a 10,000-square-foot showroom at 1060 S. Colony Road, said manager Jill Walsh, whose family started the business.

The grand opening will be held April 27, 28, and 29. The business opened the new location on Black Friday last year, but delayed the grand opening “until the spring so we can stock the store up and open up for the season with a bang,” the store’s website said.

The store sells equipment for scuba diving, snorkeling, freediving, fishing and will soon sell paddle boarding equipment, Walsh said. The store also offers scuba diving training classes, equipment rentals and service for equipment.

With the move, the store was able to add a new fishing and bait section. Another local business, Uncle B’s Bait & Tackle, contacted New England Dive about absorbing the bait business because the owner was looking to retire, Walsh said.

“We’re hoping that by taking on fishing, it will help cross over into the other water sports we carry,” she said.

Walsh’s parents, Paul and Patricia Kobrin, started the business when Walsh and her brother, Greg Kobrin, were children.

“They started it as a hobby and turned it into a business,” Walsh said.

Walsh and her brother joined the family business and today help run the store with their parents.

“We all carry our role down and we need to work together to make the business successful,” Walsh said. “It's a blessing I think to spend 40 hours a week working with your family and prosper from it.”

The grand opening will include sales, giveaways, guest speakers and entertainment, Walsh said.

“People are starting to realize where we are, tucked down almost in North Haven,” Walsh said.
