WALLINGFORD  — A local man faces charges after police said he struck an elderly woman in the face.

John Carney, 64, of 76 S. Branford Road, was charged with third-degree assault on an elderly person, interfering with police and second-degree breach of peace.

On Saturday around 7 p.m., police responded to 76 S. Branford Road for a report of an assault. Officers spoke with a woman, who said Carney lives in a guest portion of the home.  The said she was watching TV when Carney came into the room intoxicated and struck her in the face, according to a police report. The woman hid in bushes outside until authorities arrived.

Officers observed a large purple lump under her left eye, the report said.

Carney, who was still inside and visibly intoxicated, resisted officers attempts to detain him, the report said.

He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Tuesday. According to statements in court, Carney has a lengthy criminal history that includes multiple domestic violence convictions. The judge entered a protective order barring Carney from any contact with the woman and set bond at $5,000.
