WALLINGFORD — A local man prohibited from possessing weapons faces charges after police said he was found with a gun after threatening a woman.
John Carney, 64, of 76 Branford Road, was arrested Wednesday and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, carrying a firearm under the influence, first-degree threatening, violation of a protective order, interfering with police and second-degree breach of peace.
On March 29, police responded to a home for a report of a man who assaulted a woman, according to a police report. Officers arriving at the home found a woman outside with another woman and were told the man, identified as Carney, was inside the home.
Police entered the home and tried to subdue Carney, the report said. During a struggle, police say Carney threw a handgun across the floor. An officer kicked the gun farther away and a backup officer secured the weapon.
Police noted Carney had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, the report stated.
Carney was taken to a hospital for evaluation and was taken into custody by warrant on Wednesday.
Carney was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Thursday. Bond was set at $200,000 and Carney is due back in court on May 18.
