WALLINGFORD — An expansion of the Quality Subaru dealership on Route 5 is nearing completion.
The dealership is adding about 8,000 square feet to the existing 10,000-square-feet at 711 N. Colony Road. The project will expand service, sales and customer waiting areas, said Town Planner Kacie Hand.
Subaru received town approval last year and broke ground in June 2017. A Quality Subaru representative said construction is expected to finish later this summer. The dealership has remained open. An owner or manager could not be reached for comment Friday.
It is one of several to expand along Route 5 in recent years. Toyota of Wallingford, 859 N. Colony Road, is adding about 9,000 square feet to its roughly 21,000-square-foot dealership.
Quality Subaru was required by the manufacturer to complete the upgrades and expansion, project representatives told the Planning and Zoning Commission last year, according to meeting minutes.
As part of the approval, the dealership agreed to add a “significant amount of landscaping,” which is required by the town’s zoning regulations. Hand said she was pleased the dealership was “able to bring this site into compliance with the landscaping requirements as opposed trying to get a bunch of variances.”
“I think the site will end up looking very nice,” Hand said. “I think it’s going to be nice improvement to the area and they are a great business to have in town.”
The Subaru dealership is one of several in the state, with the closest other locations in Berlin, Watertown and Branford.
