Emergency crews responded at about 7:20 p.m. to the area of 325 N. Elm St. Crews on scene said the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
A 16-year-old Cheshire man said he was driving the vehicle to hockey practice at Choate Rosemary Hall when the car began smoking. He exited the vehicle without apparent injuries. His family was on the scene with him.
Fire crews closed the road between North and High streets.
As crews cleared the scene, a fire hydrant broke. Fire officials said the broken hydrant didn’t impede firefighters’ ability to put out the fire, and that the town water department arrived to assist fixing the hydrant.
