WALLINGFORD — A local car hauling company plans to build an indoor car storage facility across the street from the former Bristol-Myers Squibb property.
East Side Auto Transport, headquartered at 32 North Plains Industrial Road, delivers cars on 18-wheel semi-trailer trucks to dealerships across the east coast.
The company, which proposes to construct a 9,720 square-foot building, obtained a wetlands permit last week from the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission.
East Side Auto Transport owner Kenneth Quartuccio acquired the 3.06-acre vacant property at 6 Research Parkway about a year ago, said general manager Grant Kolton.
“We’re just growing rapidly,” Kolton said, “and we use multiple lots around town. We need parking in one place, and room for storing cars between loads.”
The business owns 35 trucks and moves about 2,000 cars a week, he said.
The garage won’t be used for long-term storage.
“A day at most,” he said. “They’d come in overnight, park and leave early in the morning. It wouldn’t interfere with normal 9-to-5 traffic.”
Increased truck traffic has been one of the main concerns raised by neighbors of the BMS property. A proposal to build two large warehouses needs a special permit from the Planning and Zoning Commission, which is due to vote on the issue next month.
Kolton said Quartuccio purchased the land “well before BMS was for sale.”
Compared to USPS and Amazon facilities nearby on Research Parkway, “we’re a fraction of the size,” he said.
At last week’s IWWC meeting, Attorney Dennis Ceneviva said there are no wetlands or watercourse on site, but there are plans for a “significant” amount of paved and fenced-in area that could park 12 to 15 trucks.
No fueling, maintenance or repairs for any vehicles will be done on site, he said.
Mike Ott, of Summer Hill Civil Engineers, said at the meeting that since the property is in the watershed protection district, the applicant has been working with the Water Department to meet storm water management requirements.
