WALLINGFORD — Police say an 86-year-old man drove into an East Center Street nail salon Thursday morning after his foot reportedly slipped off the brake of his pickup truck and onto the gas pedal.
The incident occurred in a plaza at 824 E. Center St. about 10:40 a.m. Edward Marotto, 86, of Wallingford, drove his 2018 Nissan Frontier into Sun Nails Salon, according to Lt. Cheryl Bradley. Four employees and two customers were in the salon at the time. No injuries were reported.
Police said Marotto was not cited, but his license was seized and forwarded to the Department of Motor Vehicles for review. The town building inspector was called to the scene to examine the building.
In video obtained Friday afternoon, a pickup truck appears to pull into a parking space in front of the salon before it drives over a curb and crashes through the entrance, shattering a glass door and windows. Furniture was also damaged in the crash.
The salon is owned by Jenny Rhee, who took over the business two weeks ago. Jenny Rhee’s husband, Andy Rhee, a manager, said his wife was upset about the incident and that it was a traumatic experience. It wasn't clear Friday morning when the business would reopen, and the couple expressed concerns about living expenses.
Andy Rhee said the salon’s front window and entrance were destroyed.
