EDITORIAL: Get out and vote on Tuesday!

For weeks, promises have been made, ideas pitched and insults lobbed back and forth as candidates made their case to Connecticut voters. In just a few days, office-seekers will see how well their message was received. Tuesday, Aug. 14, is primary day in our state, and both parties have nomination battles for governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer and attorney general.

Republicans also have a primary for comptroller, while Democrats will select nominees for the 13th, 16th and 34th state Senate districts. Candidates for national office also will be on the primary ballot Tuesday.

Democrats and Republicans in the 5th Congressional District — which includes Meriden and Cheshire — will make their preference known, and GOP voters statewide will decide who will take on incumbent Chris Murphy in a U.S. Senate race in November. Among the many candidates hoping to win over voters on Tuesday and earn a ballot spot in the general election are two well-known political figures in our area.

State Sen. Joe Markley, of Southington, is in the race for lieutenant governor on the Republican side, and Manny Santos, former mayor of Meriden, is among the GOP candidates vying for the 5th Congressional District seat currently held by Elizabeth Esty, who is not seeking re-election.

Keep in mind that Connecticut is a closed primary state, meaning that only Democrats and Republicans can take part. The deadline to switch parties before the primary has passed, but those who are unregistered or unaffiliated still have time to become eligible. This can be done right up until Monday at noon.

Tuesday is an important day for Connecticut residents. Primary winners could potentially wield great power and make decisions which affect us all. Research candidates this weekend. See what they believe in. Maybe hear them out at a campaign event. Then get out and vote Tuesday. Make your voice heard.
