LETTERS: Paying students to attend school?, Local veterinarian retires 



Paying kids to do badly

I read Chris Powell's article which imparts information about Hartford paying or planning to consider paying 9th-graders who are not doing well in school so that they'll come to school. Maybe I'm missing something and maybe this does work in other places but as a parent I can't see how I can motivate my children (hypothetically here) to go to school and do well, do their chores and earned allowance if they could literally make $80 more a week on average by doing bad at school. Wouldn't it make more sense to have paid incentives for kids who keep their grades up and who do their best? Or at least some kind of incentive to counteract paying children who are not doing what they are supposed to. For example, my kids each have the ability to start at $20. From that if they want to have a cell phone they need to pay their $5 a week towards their cell phone bill. So they average $15 a week. I guess at the end of the day Hartford clearly can do whatever they want but I as a parent in Meriden really hope Meriden doesn't catch on to that because I can't think of a single day I would explain to my children why they should do well as they head towards high school if they can be paid for not having done their best.

I was fortunate to find the most competent, compassionate and trustworthy veterinarian several years ago. His reputation preceded him, and was well earned. Dr. Larry Brooks is not your ordinary veterinarian; he is a brilliant, talented, well-rounded man, who's honesty with animals transcends. Even my most difficult pup is calm in his care. He lived, loved and built his practice in the town of Middlefield, where he remained for over 30 years. He was respected and appreciated over these years. His name and practice were inseparable. In a turn of events, he had to make the difficult decision to sell his business, to the deep disappointment of his devoted clients. Whatever Dr. Brooks decides for his future, I, along with countless others, support him and hope he can continue to care for our beloved fur-babies.
