MONDAY SOFTBALL: Rams get what they need; Wilcox romps in its conference quarterfinal

CHESHIRE — The Cheshire softball team broke a scoreless drought in the fourth inning of Monday’s SCC Tournament quarterfinal game with Daniel Hand.

Then the real rain arrived in the fifth inning.

By then, the No. 2 Rams had recorded enough outs on the No. 7 Tigers to secure an official 2-0 victory that advances them to Tuesday’s semifinals against No. 3 Amity at Biondi Field in West Haven.

Lexie Hemstock snapped the 0-0 tie when she doubled home Sarah Capute, who was pinch-running for pitcher Bri Pearson. Ella Watson later scored the second Cheshire run.

It was plenty for Pearson. The sophomore allowed just four hits while striking out six.

Ari Perlini finished 2-for-2 for Cheshire. Bri Floyd and Grace Lurz added singles.

The Rams are now 18-3. They split with Amity (14-7) on back-to-back days during the regular season. Amity won its quarterfinal on Monday 4-1 over West Haven.

Wilcox Tech 19, Goodwin Tech 4: The Indians steamrolled the Gladiators in a CTC Tournament quarterfinal in Meriden and will remain at home for Tuesday’s semifinals.

Southington 21, Northwest Catholic 3: The Blue Knights cruised to an CCC West-Colonial Division victory in a game moved to Fast Pitch Nation Park in Windsor.

Southington improved to 15-3 on the season. The West Hartford school fell to 4-15.

The Blue Knights cap the regular season with home games against Enfield and Conard over the next two days.
