TRACK & FIELD: Sheehan’s Davis breaks SCC East Sectional record in javelin; Connolly captures two golds; Cheshire’s 4x800 and freshman hurdler shine

NEW HAVEN — Jordan Davis set a meet and school record in winning the javelin and Sheehan teammate Kyra Connolly captured two events to highlight local performances at the SCC East Sectional track and field meet Tuesday at Bowen Field.

Davis, a junior, uncorked a throw of 193 feet on his first attempt and went on to win by nearly 28 feet.

Connolly, a senior, cleared 10 feet in the pole vault and 4-8 in the high jump. Her two gold medals helped the Lady Titans finish second in the team standings behind Hillhouse.

Cheshire also had a good day. The boys 4x800 relay team of Charlie Pettit, Brendan Mellitt, Francis Simpatico and Charlie Farrell opened the day winning their race in 8:18.85.

Later in the meet, Cheshire freshman Kira Zawalich won the 300 hurdles in 48.17 seconds.

That race featured three locals on the podium. Sheehan’s Clarisse Aminawung and Cheshire’s Jordan DeMatteo, both sophomores, finished second and third in 49.14 and 50.77, respectively.

Aminawung was in the middle of a lot point-gathering for the Titans on Tuesday. Along with her silver in the hurdles, Aminawung ran on two second-place relays. She teamed with Rayna Esch, Allison Villano and Patrice Mansfield on the 4x100 (51.70) and with Katherine Cappetta, Avery Winters and Julia Mansfield in the 4x400 (4:15.39).

Earlier, Winters had run a third-place time of 27.18 in the 200.

Sheehan’s top male sprinter, reigning Class M 100-meter champ Terrence Bogan, was second in both the 100 and 200. The junior ran an 11.06 in the 100 and a 22.63 in the 200.

Lyman Hall’s Michael Toppin, who just missed out on the top three in the 200, came back to place second in the 400. Toppin clocked in at 50.53 seconds.

Second-place performances were also turned in by Liz Brown and Erin Brennan of Sheehan. Brown, a sophomore, ran a 12:02 in the 3200. Brennan, a freshman, landed a school-record 16-10¾ in the long jump.

Erin Brennan also tied for third in the pole vault, which saw a 1-2-3 Sheehan finish. Following Connolly was Marley Esch at 9 feet and Brennan at 8.

In the boys field events, Sheehan teammates Riley Bjornberg (20-3) and Max Luddy 19-10¾) went 2-3 in the long jump. Mike Lemay was third in javelin for the Titans (159-6) and Cyle Martindale took bronze in discus (121-11).

Cheshire, meanwhile, stretched its legs behind Mellitt, Ryan Farrell, Riley Pettit and Samantha Nowak.

Farrell was second in the 800 at 1:59.88, while Mellitt came off his win with the 4x800 relay to take third in the 3200 in 9:50.

For the Lady Rams, Pettit was third in the 100 hurdles (17.02) and Nowak was third in the long jump (16-9¼).
