AROUND THE HORN: Hunter links hot in July; ace lands at Wally CC; Meriden 15U falls; Wallingford Cards eye title; fall ball league taking signups


MERIDEN — The heat and humidity of July did not keep the Hunter Women’s Golf League off the course.

Winners in the 18-hole tournaments were MJ Petretto, Lynne Grobsky, Judy Soprano, Sharon Criscuolo, Nancy Sattler, Lorraine Pettola, Jeannie Pac, Myra Reynolds, Fran Beedle, Myra Sanchez, Chet Mrazik, Marian Michnowicz, Linda Hipski, Alice Schilling, Ronnie Haeberlen, Mary Galati, Cindy Kennedy and Mara Dunleavy.

In the 9-hole evening league, July winners included Jeanne Magyar, Catherina Carlette, Julie Anderson, Nancy Kiel, Peggy Baker, Karen Cebula, Leslie Zucker, Deb Flint, Kathy Roman, Kate Kelly, Cindy Semrau, Nat Calle and Valerie Miller.

The bi-weekly tournament winners were Marian Michnowicz, Bette Slowther, Lorraine Pettola, Lisa Bishop, Judy Soprano, Mara Dunleavy, Linda Falis, Alice Schilling, Chet Mrazik, Myra Sanchez and Jeanne Magyar.

Next up for the Hunter ladies is the annual member/member tournament on Sunday.

Eagle lands again at Wallingford CC

WALLINGFORD — Franco Alfano connected for the latest hole-in-one at the Wallingford Country Club on Friday.

Using a 3-wood, Alfano aced the 224-yard fourth hole. He was playing with Mike O’Hara, Rich Lucibello and Art Satterthwaite.

Meriden 15U squad falls in semis

STAMFORD — Meriden Post 45’s 15U team suffered a 4-3 loss to Stamford in its American Legion prep tournament semifinal on Thursday night.

The local squad was looking to land a home date in the 15U state championship game, which will be played Sunday at Ceppa Field at 4 p.m.

Instead, Stamford will square off with Ellington, which advanced to the final with a 3-0 shutout of Avon.

Cardinals chasing youth league crown

WALLINGFORD — The Wallingford Cardinals’ entry in the prep division of the Farmington Bank/Vantis Life Baseball League has reached the championship game.

The Cardinals will square off with the West Hartford Lightning at New Britain Stadium on Sunday at 10 a.m. The other league finals pit Newington against the Connecticut Tides in the junior division (1:30 p.m.) and the CT Dirt Bags vs. CATIC Bombers in the senior division (5 p.m.).

All finals will be played Sunday at New Britain Stadium.

Wallingford/Yalesville taking fall signups

WALLINGFORD — Online registration is under way for the Wallingford/Yalesville Fall Ball season at

The league is also taking in-person singups this Saturday, Aug. 4 and next Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Parker Farms baseball complex at 30 Parker Farms Road.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.  First-time players are asked to register in person.

Competition will be held in the following divisions: Clinic (ages 4-6, coaches pitch, $40 entry fee); Bronze (6-7, for children likely playing AA next year, $70); Silver (7-10, for children likely playing AAA, $100); Gold (9-11, for children likely playing Majors, $100); Transitional (12, for children entering Junior League, $120) and Senior League (13-16, for children in Junior League, $120).

Player evaluations will take place at Parker Farms on Sunday, Aug. 19. Players in the Bronze, Silver and Gold divisions will be on the field at 10 a.m. following a 9 a.m. check-in. The Junior and Senior divisions will follow at 12:30 following a noon check-in.
