SCC shifts soccer, volleyball divisions

NEW HAVEN — In the first wave of its planned realignment for 2018, the SCC on Friday announced the new divisions for boys soccer, girls soccer and volleyball.

These new divisions, which will also be drawn up later for basketball, baseball and softball, are for the 2018-19 school year only. They replace the ones enacted in 2016, when the SCC scrapped the long-standing divisions based on geography and replaced them with ones dictated by wins and losses in recent seasons.

The net sum for area teams are a few more head-to-head contests as divisional rivals. Cheshire and Lyman Hall, for example, are now in the same divisions in boys osccer and volleyball.

Lyman Hall and Sheehan, as primary rivals, will continue to play twice a season in all three sports even though they are not in the same divisions.

Here’s the breakdown by school.

■Cheshire: The Rams are two-time defending champs in volleyball and both soccers. The volleyball team remains in the SCC Hammonassett, but is now joined by Lyman Hall, Brnaford, Hand and Mercy.

Boys soccer also stays put in the Oronoque Division, with main challenger Guilford moving out and Lyman Hall, Hamden, Branford and East Haven moving in.

Girls soccer moves from the Housatonic to the Quinnipiac, joined by Mercy, North Haven and Hamden.

■Lyman Hall: Along with being grouped with Cheshire in boys soccer and volleyball, the Trojans see their girls soccer team move from the Quinnipiac to the Hammonasset. They’ll be joined there by Hand, Guilford, West Haven and East Haven.■Sheehan: The Titans have moved from the Housatonic to the Hammonasset in boys soccer and from the Hammonasset to the Quinnipiac in volleyball. Got that?

New division rivals for the boys are Shelton, Fairfield Prep, Career and West Haven. New division rivals for the girls are Hameden, Jonathan Law, Career and Sacred Heart Academy.

The girls soccer team, which has been runner-up to Shelton in the Oronoque in each of the last two years, goes to the Hammonasset and joins Hand, Guilford, West Haven and East Haven.
