AROUND THE HORN: Sixth annual ‘Green Bay for Coach Smaz’ runs Sept. 9; Meriden Fun Run summer series wraps up; Hergott earns captain’s stripes at Bentley

MERIDEN — The Maloney football program will hold its sixth annual “Green Bay for Coach Smaz” on Sunday, Sept. 9.

The annual event, held in memory of Rob Szymaszek, reprises the “Green Bay” running drill that the late head coach made a weekly staple of Maloney practices. The event raises money for Szymaszek’s memorial scholarship fund.

Running gets started on the 9th at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Maloney assistant football coach Mike Falis at 203-631-7851.

Santos snags final Fun Run

MERIDEN — Simon Santos ran a 19:35 over the three-mile course at Platt High School to win the final Meriden Fun Run race of the summer.

The finale was the closest in the nine-event series. Santos won by just two seconds over Tom Starodaj.

Mike Perkowski placed third in 21:07. Salena Chatman was the top female in 23:31.

Hergott a Bentley XC captain

WALTHAM, Mass. — Wallingford native Dan Hergott has been named one of three captains for this year’s Bentley University cross country program.

Hergott is a senior out of Xavier. He scored in four of Bentley’s five races last season and was 40th at the Northeast-10 Championships. His twin sister Hayley also runs for the Falcons.

Bentley opens the 2018 season Saturday with the Shacklette Invitational at Saint Anselm.
