AROUND THE HORN: Maloney hosting Unified Sports hoop event; Spartan girls go to the line for charity; Blue Knights take weight lifting contest; Cloutier tearing it up for SCSU

MERIDEN — Maloney High School is hosting a CIAC Unified Sports high school basketball tournament on Thursday from 3-5 p.m.

The event begins with an opening ceremony and parade of teams. Between 250-300 students from across the state are expected to participate.

Maloney girls go to the line for charity 

MERIDEN — The Maloney girls basketball team recently participated in a shoot-a-thon that resulted in $560 being raised for the Ronald McDonald House.

Players raised funds by getting pledges for made foul shots. Then they hit the gym and shot 100 foul shots apiece.

Ronald McDonald House provides lodging to keep families intact while a child undergoes medical treatment.

Knights capture lifting competition

NEW BRITAIN — Southington captured this year’s High School Football Weight Lifting Competition by hoisting a combined 13,130 pounds.

The event, staged by the ShopRite Nutmeg State Games and Connecticut National Guard at New Britain High School, drew 26 teams.

Among them were Cheshire and Sheehan. Both finished high in the standings — Cheshire fourth at 12,310 pounds. Sheehan fifth at 12,075.

Individually, Cheshire’s Christian Russo was first among lifters weighing 160 pounds or less. He lifted a combined 920 pounds. Cheshire teammate Chisom Okoro was tops in the 181-200 bracket at 1,045 pounds.

Southington teammates Dillon Kohl and Angelo Plantamuro went 1-2 in the161-180 division. Kohl put up 1,000 pounds and Plantamuro 925.

Sheehan’s top performances were in the power clean. Michael LeMay had a division-best 235 pounds in the 160-and-under group. T.J. DiPasquale topped the field in the 220-and-over class with 300.

Cloutier lands on NE-10 Honor Roll

NEW HAVEN — Southern Connecticut State University junior outfielder Nolan Cloutier of Wallingford earned a spot on this week’s Northeast 10 Conference Baseball Weekly Honor Roll after batting .667 during a weekend series in Florida against Concordia and Queens.

Cloutier went 8-for-12 over the course of three games. Four of his hits were doubles. The Sheehan grad also scored a combined six runs.

Cloutier had multiple hits in all three games. His top outing came against Concordia: 4-for-5, two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.

The weekend tear gave Cloutier multiple hits in seven of his last eight games. It also raised his season batting average from .400 to .486.

The Owls remain in Florida through Saturday. They are scheduled to play their Connecticut opener next Wednesday at the University of Bridgeport.

Geno appearing at Chamber event

ROCKY HILL — UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma will be the guest speaker at this month’s Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce Member Breakfast on Monday, March 18 at the Sheraton Hartford South Hotel in Rocky Hill.

The breakfast buffet opens at 7:15. Auriemma will appear at 8 a.m.

Cost is $22 for members of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, $32 for non-members. Register online at middlesexchamber.com.
