AROUND THE HORN: Meriden Sports Reunion selection meeting postponed to Feb. 19; Meriden YMCA gearing up for softball clinic

MERIDEN — With wintry weather on the way, the Meriden Sports Reunion committee meeting slated for Tuesday, Feb. 12 has been rescheduled to next Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The session will begin at 4 p.m. at the Meriden Elks Club on East Main Street.

All committee members are urged to attend. This year’s Sportsmen of Distinction will be selected at the meeting.

The 2019 Reunion Dinner is on the calendar for Tuesday, April 9 at the Elks Club starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a full-course prime rib dinner and dessert.

Meriden Y staging softball clinic

MERIDEN — The Meriden YMCA is hosting a softball clinic over President's Day Weekend for students in grades 1-6 looking to sharpen their hitting, fielding and pitching skills.

The three-day clinic will be led by Meriden's Larue Graham, head coach and director of Connecticut Shock Softball.

All three sessions are at the Meriden YMCA Athletic Center: Saturday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 17 from 35:30 p.m.; Monday, Feb. 18 from 5:30-8 p.m.

Fees are $75 for Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA full members and $105 for program members.

NFL players will be back March 8-9

WALLINGFORD — The United Way NFL Players' Weekend is ready to roll March 8-9.

The event features three sessions: Friday night's silent/live auction dinner buffet at Zandri's Stillwood Inn, 6-10 p.m.; Saturday afternoon's youth clinic at Choate, noon to 3 p.m.; Saturday night's "Bowl with the Pros" at Colony Lanes, 6-9:30 p.m.

More than 20 players are expected from the Patriots, Buccaneers, Bears, Ravens, Cowboys and Redskins.

Dinner discounts are available for registrations made by Friday, Feb. 15. A table of 10 is $700, a half-table of five $350. After Feb. 15, a table of 10 will be $800.

The youth clinic is open to kids ages 8-14. Pre-registration is mandatory. Entry fee is $50.
