AROUND THE HORN: Terzi returns to emcee Meriden Sports Reunion; Midstate Rugby opens with victory; Wallingford’s Neilander delivers for AMC lax



MERIDEN — Al Terzi will once again serve as master of ceremonies at the Meriden Sports Reunion Dinner.

This will be the fifth Sporst Reunion at the mic for Terzi, who has spent 50 years as a TV anchor and reporter. 

This year’s dinner is in two weeks, Tuesday April 9, at the Meriden Elks Club. Donald Green and Marty Roberts are the Sportsmen of Distinction.

Terzi is currently co-host of Fox CT’s Sunday morning political issues program, “The Real Story.” He also teaches public speaking at Middlesex Community College’s Meriden campus.

Terzi holds a law degree from UConn and is a Vietnam-era veteran, having served more than seven years with Air Force intelligence units in the Far East.

Midstate Rugby takes season opener

MERIDEN — The Midstate Rugby Club’s high school boys team opened its spring campaign with a 31-12 victory at Falcon Field against Simsbury High School’s Division 2 side.

Roberto Alavarez of Seymour, Mason Hale of Bristol Central, Khalid Minihan of Cheshire, Aiden Maher of Haddam-Killingworth and Ben Falivene of Valley Regional scored the tries for Midstate.

Denys Fuetes of Cheshire kicked three conversions. Ian DeBaise of Lyman Hall and Bob Huscher of Coginchaug also had strong games.

Midstate returns to action this Sunday, March 31 in a doubleheader at Meriden’s Mountain Mist Day Camp. The Midstate Girls play their season opener at noon against Lincoln Sudbury, Mass. and the boys play in the second game.

Neilander fills the nets for AMC

NEW HAVEN — After scoring seven goals in a single game earier this month, freshman Madison Neilander of Wallingford continues to lead the Albertus Magnus College women’s lacrosse team in scoring.

Neilander, a 2018 Sheehan grad, has 12 goals heading into Tuesday’s game at Dean College in Franklin, Mass.

Neilander’s 12 goals have come on 26 shots on net. She had seven goals against St. Joseph. Those seven came on 11 shots.

Neilander, an Education major, also plays field hockey for AMC.

Wayton Open on the calender for July

SOUTHINGTON — The 12th annual Wayton Open Tennis Tournament will play the week of July 6-14 at Southington High School.

There will be competition in 12 divisions, including high school brackets. 

Entry fees are $20 for singles, $40 for doubles. Proceeds benefit Thank Dog Rescue.
