AROUND THE HORN: Meriden Raiders lock it down, post four shutouts



MERIDEN — Defense was in the spotlight as the Meriden Raiders youth football program went 5-1 this past weekend.

Four Raiders teams pitched shutouts, with the youngest and oldest Raiders leading the way. The 8U team rolled through East Hartford 46-0 to improve to 2-0 and the 14U club romped 48-0 at Middletown to even up at 1-1.

The 8U team is one of three Meriden squads off to a 2-0 start. The 9U boys improved with a 26-0 victory over Middletown. The 12U team followed up its season-opening victory with a 24-6 decision against East Hartford.

The 10U team had this week’s fourth shutout, 32-0 over East Hartford, to improve to 1-1. The 11U boys fell to 1-1 with a 20-0 defeat at the hands of New Britain.

Meriden Y taking flag football signups

MERIDEN — Registrations are still being taken for the Meriden YMCA’s NFL Flag Football League.

Weekly games are played at Ceppa Field. Three age groups are offered: 5-7, 8-10, and 11–13. 

Players will learn football fundamentals and lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. Children also receive NFL team jerseys.

Arts group slates annual golf outing

SOUTHINGTON — Creative Arts for Developing Minds (CADM) is holding is annual Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Hawks Landing Golf Course. Shotgun start is at 8 a.m.

Entry fee of 125 includes 18 holes, lunch and raffle prizes.

CADM brings arts, dance and music to the Connecticut foster care program. Sponsorships are available.

Meriden wrestling slates signups

MERIDEN — Meriden Youth Wrestling is holding signups for the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, Oct. 15, and Thursday, Oct. 17 at Thomas Edison Middle School, both from 6-8 p.m. in the hallway of the school's main entrance. 

Entry fees are $75 for the first wrestler in the family, $70 for each subsequent wrestler. 

Practice opens Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Thomas Edison and runs weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays (and possibly additional nights) from 6-8 p.m. 

Competition is based on age, weight and experience. Meriden Youth Wrestling competes against other local wrestling clubs and participates in optional weekend tournaments throughout Connecticut against wrestlers from across New England.
