TUESDAY BASKETBALL: Wilcox boys hoop goes to 2-0; Maloney pops Plainville; Sheehan drops opener 


MIDDLETOWN — The Wilcox Tech boys basketball team completed a 2-0 run through the Vinal Tech Tip-Off Tournament, beating the host team 65-53 on Tuesday evening.

The Indians, coming off a 90-61 opening win over Windham Tech, jumped to a 16-9 first-quarter lead over Vinal and pushed it to 37-19 by intermission.

D.J. Ransom scored a game-high 23 points to lead Wilcox. Will Pawlik finished with 16. John Soto had 13.

Vinal Tech fell to 0-2.

Maloney 80, Plainville 46: The Spartans put 11 players in the scoring column, including four in double figures, in routing the Blue Devils in a CCC South crossover game on the East Side.

Romello Samuels led the way with 14 points. Damian Pantoja and Jose Roman had 11 apiece. Bryan Saguay added 10.

After a tight first quarter that ended with Maloney up 12-11, the home team surged to a 33-24 halftime lead, then blew it open to 61-36 in the third quarter.

Maloney improved to 1-1. The game was Plainville’s season opener.

East Haven 66, Sheehan 58: Garrett Molampy led a spirited Sheehan comeback bid in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of his team-high 25 points — including all three of his 3-pointers — before the Easties put this SCC interdivisional game away behind Ed Popolizio and Nate Furino.

Popolizio finished with a game-high 28 points, with 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Popolizio was 8-for-11 from the line. Furino drained four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

The game, played in Wallingford, was Sheehan’s season opener. East Haven, which led 48-36 after the third quarter is 1-1.

Girls basketball

Jonathan Law 62, Lyman Hall 54: Down 24-21 at halftime, the Eagles outscored the Trojans 22-11 to take command of this SCC Oronoque game in Wallingford and remain unbeaten.

Law (3-0) put four players in double figures, led by Pam Ellison’s game-high 17 points.

Kailey Lipka had 16 for LH (2-2). Hailey Bruneau finished with 12. Both girls hit three 3-pointers.

Bruneau and Elise Hastings had six rebounds apiece.

Career 64, Cheshire 27: The Panthers (3-0) remained unbeaten and the Rams (0-3) were still looking for their first win in the wake of this SCC Housatonic game in Cheshire.

KyJae Hargrove led Career with 18 points. Ariana Perlini was top scorer for Cheshire with eight.

Plainville 53, Maloney 22: Olivia Aitken and Melanie Polanco scored six points apiece for the Spartans in the CCC South crossover loss in Plainville.

Caitlin Baker had 22 to lead Plainville.

Maloney is 1-3, Plainville 3-1.

Glastonbury 39, Southington 29:The Blue Knights fell to 1-2 with the CCC West crossover loss at home to the Tomahawks. 

Janette Wadolowski had 21 of Southington’s 29 points. Ali Carr added six. Charlotte Bassett had a team-high 10 for Glastonbury.

Indoor Track

Sheehan: The Titans had a number of their girls qualify for the Class M meet with their performances at the SCC Developmental at Hillhouse.

Olivia Dubuc qualified in the 600 meters (1:46.45) and Elisa Tolentino (14 feet, 10 inches) made it in the long jump. They also qualified as part of the 4x200 team (1:57.99) with Julia and Amelia Mansfield.

Stephanie Phoenix (9-0) and Kyra Connolly (8-0) qualified in pole vault. Three Titans are going in the shot put: Amanda Brown (29-1), Riley Wolcheski (28-11) and Jenna McCarthy (28-4 1/2).

Nikki Santillo (9.81) and Kelly Midolo (10.38) both qualfied in the 55-meter hurdles. Christine Thorp is going in the 1000 meters (3:27.87).
