HARTFORD — Ryan Howard hit a run-scoring single in the first inning, leading the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a 6-5 win over the Hartford Yard Goats on Wednesday.
The single by Howard started the scoring in a three-run inning and gave the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Zach Houchins hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Johneshwy Fargas.
The Flying Squirrels later added two runs in the second and one in the sixth. In the second, Howard hit an RBI single and Jacob Heyward hit an RBI double, while Bryce Johnson hit an RBI single in the sixth.
Hartford saw its comeback attempt come up short after Carlos Herrera hit an RBI single, bringing home Mylz Jones in the ninth inning to cut the Richmond lead to 6-5.
Richmond starter Garrett Williams (4-7) picked up the win despite allowing four runs over five innings. Opposing starter Jack Wynkoop (6-11) took the loss in the Eastern League game after allowing six runs and 10 hits over six innings.
