WEST HARTFORD — The Southington boys swimming team won five events Wednesday afternoon to run away with the CCC West championship at Cornerstone Aquatics Center.
The Blue Knights out-swam their closest challengers, Conard and Hall, behind the first-place 200-yard medley relay and individual winners Tyler Heidgerd, Brendon Egan and Chase Galayda.
Heidgerd won CCC West crowns in two events. The sophomore captured the 200 freestyle in 1:49.07 and 100 backstroke in 54.54.
Galayda, a junior, set a new school record in winning diving. With 276.20 points, Galayda surpassed a program mark that had stood since 1990.
As for the senior Egan, he won the 100 butterfly (55.25) and teamed with Derek Melanson, Evan Bender and Alex Kuhr on the winning medley relay (1:45.84).
Southington’s freestyle relays both finished second. Egan (breaststroke), Melanson (IM and 500 free) and Kuhr (50 free) had individual runner-up performances.
SCC Championships: At Southern Connecticut State University, Cheshire’s Ben Brewer placed second in two events.
Brewer swam a 52.94 in the 100 butterfly and a 1:46.37 in the 200 freestyle.
He also teamed with Sam Hanke, Richmond Le and Joe Cannata to place fourth in the medley relay (1:41.29).
