MADISON – An evening at the beach for the upset-minded Maloney boys soccer team turned into a tidal wave Saturday as No. 10 Daniel Hand dunked the 15th-seeded Spartans 3-0 in a Class L tournament quarterfinal at the Surf Club.
Hand (17-3-2), the champion of the SCC and defending Class L kingpin, advances to meet league foe and arch-rival Guilford in a semifinal at West Haven High on Monday. Top-seeded E.O. Smith and No. 4 Masuk will tangle in the other semifinal. Hand is seeking its fifth state title.
The Spartans, who began the season with four losses in their first six games, ended the campaign at 12-7. Maloney, buoyed by the emergence of some younger players like freshman Noah Lopez, came into the match having won eight of its nine starts.
