AROUND THE HORN: Wallingford road running card filling up; Wednesday golf league results from Traditions GC

WALLINGFORD — A new road race joins the area running calendar this weekend as the Carver Challenge 5K runs Saturday, May 18 at New Life Church on 350 High Hill Road.

The race, which starts at 9 a.m., supports Carver Academy, the private K-6 Christian school also located at 350 High Hill Road. Visit CarverChallengeCT.org.

In A Heartbeat 5K runs on June 2

WALLINGFORD — The second annual In A Heartbeat 5K Road Race returns on Sunday, June 2.

The event, a fundraiser for Mike Papale’s In A Heartbeat Foundation, kicks off at 10 a.m. at Choate Rosemary Hall. Entry fees are $25 in advance, $30 on race day.

The In A Heartbeat 5K is part of the Wallingford Race Series, which also includes the Fishbein/YMCA Community Road Race on Oct. 6 and the Kiwanis Club Turkey Trot on Nov. 17. Contact the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce for details.

Traditions golf league heats up

WALLINGFORD — The competition has been strong in the Wednesday women’s league at Tradition Golf Club.

The month opened with Carmela DiNatale shooting a gross 54 to win Flight 1 and Linda Fronte posting a gross 59 to take Flight 2.

The net winners were Jean Cerino (41) in Flight 1 and Sandy Duffy (46) in Flight 2. Linda Kupstis carded a gross 64 to win Flight 3.

In the May 8 outing, Linda Guerra’s gross 47 won Flight 1, while Lori Crispino’s 39 was low net. Flight 2 winners were Colleen Girard (56) and Mary Donahue (35). A 63 earned Peggy Antonelli first place in Flight 3.

This Wednesday, Donna Altieri returned to the top of Flight 1 with a gross 46. Katie Hosfelt fired low net at 33. Eileen Carleton (gross 62) and Alexis Connolly (41) were the Flight 2 winners. 

YMCA launching youth golf program

MERIDEN —The Meriden YMCA is taking signups for its new youth golf program. Lessons are open to kids ages 8-13 and will be led by Wallingford Country Club golf pro Jay Mezei in the Meriden YMCA's new golf room.

Participants will be introduced to the techniques, skills and rules and etiquette of the sport. Lessons begin Monday, May 20 and run for five weeks (no class on Memorial Day).
