AROUND THE HORN: Pettit collects 100th point in LH hockey win; Sportsmen of Distinction being selected Tuesday; Franciscans land big names for banquet



NORTHFORD — A 7-5 victory over JBWA late Sunday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion got the Lyman Hall Co-op hockey team back on the winning track. It also featured career point No. 100 for junior forward Matt Pettit.

Pettit scored an empty-net goal to put the icing on a Division III victory that snapped a three-game slide and improved the Trojans to 13-6-0.

Jack Roberts scored three goals for the Co-op. His third goal tied the game with 3½ minutes to play. His older brother, Kyle Roberts, scored the game-winner one minute later.

The goal was the second of the game for Kyle Roberts. Connor Satton also scored for the Trojans, who close out the regular season back at Northford on Saturday against the East Haven Co-op at 5:30 p.m.

Sports Reunion selecting Sportsmen of Distinction on Tuesday

MERIDEN — The 2019 Meriden Sportsmen of Distinction will be selected Tuesday afternoon when the Meriden Sports Reunion meets at the Elks Club at 4 p.m.

All committee members are urged to attend the meeting.

The 2019 Reunion Dinner is Tuesday, April 9 at the Elks Club starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a full-course prime rib dinner and dessert.

Wright, Robinson lead Franciscan honorees

MERIDEN — Villanova men’s basketball coach Jay Wright and MLB consultant Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson, are the headliners at this year’s Franciscan Sports Banquet and Silent Auction.

Wright, who led his team to the NCAA Division I national championship in 2016 and again last year, will receive the Saint Francis Award.

Robinson, an author and educational consultant for MLB, has been chosen for the Saint Clare Award.

This year’s banquet is scheduled for Tuesday night, June 4 at the Aqua Turf Club from 5:30-9:30 p.m. The event benefits the Franciscan Life Center and Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care.

Other honorees this year include Paul Polo, Senior Vice President of ACMT, Inc. (Jim Calhoun Community Service Award) and Ray Andrewsen, General Manager of WQUN (Dean of Sports Award).

John Sullivan, owner of Sullivan Brothers Remodeling, is getting the Mother Shaun Appreciation Award.

The Franciscans are also recognizing North Haven’s Bob DeMayo, Connecticut’s winningest baseball coach who went over 900 career wins last spring at age 85.

Tickets cost $65. Children 12 and under are $30.
