WOLCOTT – Southington senior Janette Wadolowski exploded for a career-high 39 points to go along with 14 rebounds to lead the Blue Knights to a 71-59 victory over Brookfield in the First Annual John Rossi Holiday Tournament at Wolcott High School on Wednesday night.
Southington trailed by as many as 17 points in the first quarter and chipped away before finally taking the lead in the third quarter.
Kaitlin Farias was unstoppable in the first half with 17 of her 20 points in the opening 16 minutes. Southington coach Mike Forgione switched freshman Allison Carr (10 points, 10 rebounds) on Farias in the second half. The move worked, Farias only scored three points in the second half.
Wadolowski used was unstoppable, punishing Brookfield with her mid-range game.
“We needed her presence when we got down early,” Forgione said. “We needed her to step up in the second half and she did that. Not only is she so athletic, but she’s strong. She did a nice job settling us down.”
The Knights trailed 23-6 late in the first quarter.
Southington will face host Wolcott High School on Thursday. Tip time is 6:30 p.m.
Sheehan 73, Fitch 43: The Titans dropped the Groton squad for the second time in nine days, this time in Wallingford.
Junior Liv Robles dropped in 14 points and senior Lexi Ocasio paced a balanced Sheehan attack. Maddie Larkin (11 points), Hayleigh Lagase (10), Carolyn Biel (8 points) and Caitlyn Velez (7) were also threats for the Titans, now 3-1.
Ciarra Jimenez netted a game-high 22 points for Fitch (4-1).
Lyman Hall 58, Sacred Heart Academy 32: The Trojans improved to 4-2 on the season behind 17 points and five assists from Kailey Lipka in a SCC crossover contest in Wallingford.
Hailey Bruneau poured in 12 points and totalled four steals. Elise Hastings also had 12 points for LH. Julia Capello registered eight points for the Trojans and Kelly Fernandez grabbed seven boards.
The Sharks dropped to 0-3 with the defeat.
Wethersfield 61, Maloney 26: The Spartans lost to the hosts at the Wethersfield Holiday Tournament to fall to 1-4.
Melanie Polanco and Olivia Aitken had nine points each to pace the Spartans. The Eagles (3-1) got 14 points from Cheyenne Mone-Smith and 13 apiece from Alice Kelly and Nicole Gwynn, daughter of ex-UConn guard John Gwynn.
