WALLINGFORD — The Sheehan hockey team can thank its 1-0 start to the season to an offensive fire sparked by underclassmen.
The Titans routed Masuk 6-1 in their opener Wednesday night at Choate with freshmen Anthony and Joey Romano, along with sophomore Dayton Allderige, putting their names on the score sheet.
“It feels really good,” said coach Dave Festa. “We had a really good preseason and I think that set the tone.
“That young fire power is pushing the upperclassmen,” Festa added. “They’re really responding. They're really setting the tone and taking care of opportunities.”
Allderige got the action going with the game’s first goal at 7:15, burying his own rebound in close to the Masuk net.
Almost three minutes later, the freshmen started getting in on the action. Joey Romano tapped in a pass from his brother Anthony to give the Titans a 2-0 lead as the clock ticked to intermission.
The second period was where the after-burners fired up for the Titans. A two-goal period for senior Tyler Jackson put this one even farther from Masuk’s reach.
Nick Spina added one of his one to make the score 5-0 at the end of the second.
In the final period, Sheehan and Masuk traded a goal. Allderige scored his second of the night and Masuk’s Will Ferraro broke Sheehan goalie Tyler Robertson’s shutout bid.
Sheehan will look to make it 2-0 when it travels to Norwich on Saturday to face off with the Redhawks.
