The Long Journey Home for Albert Afraid of Hawk

Nicholas Bellatoni, Connecticut State Archaelogist, enthralled to Castle Craig Adult Learning Center members with the story of Albert Afraid Of Hawk, a Lakota Sioux, who died in Danbury, in June 1900, while performing with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. He was buried in an unmarked grave, a forgotten man. His relatives asked for his body be returned to them and after a search the body was located and was exhumed in August 2012.

The presentation told the story of the Lakota people, the archaelogical exhumation, forensic identification and repatriation of his remains. His reburial took place at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in September 2012.

Rosa Ponselle

A class on Meriden’s own Rosa Ponselle was enjoyed by the members of the Castle Craig Adult Learning Center. Valerie Bubon took us back to days when Rosa Ponselle was the first American-born singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House. he first appeared with Enrico Caruso in Verdi’s grand opera “La Froza del Destino”. Rosa had no formal education in music but she became known for her excellent voice and traveled the world singing at the opera houses. She sang “The Star Spangled Banner” in 1952, for Eisenhower at a convention in Washington.
