WALLINGFORD — A child was killed and two adults were hospitalized in an afternoon accident on Route 15 south near exit 66.
Jay Goodwin, Jr., 7, of North Haven, was riding in the rear of a vehicle driven by his father Jay Goodwin, 38, also of North Haven, when the car crossed into the center median strip and proceeded to roll over. Jay Goodwin Jr. was thrown from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries in the course of the crash.
The elder Goodwin and the front-seat passenger, Rachel Coppola, 37, of North Haven, were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital.
Jay Goodwin suffered an “incapacitating injury” in the wreck, while Coppola’s condition is unknown, according to a state police accident report.
The incident closed both lanes in the exit’s vicinity for more than three hours as troopers attended to the accident scene.
Battalion Chief Edward Butkus of the Wallingford Fire Department said units responded to the call at about 1:15 p.m. and were on site until just before 5 p.m. when the road reopened.
State police are conducting an ongoing investigation of the incident, said spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance.
