MERIDEN - In floppy red hats with flowers and lace around the outside, the women of the Silver City Red Hat Society entertained seniors with a variety show Monday afternoon.

From a World War II-inspired selection of songs on an accordion to the recitation of a poem warning against thinking too much about propriety, the women elicited laughs, applause and a few nostalgic nods.

This was the fourth year the society has held its "Red Hat Follies" show, in which members perform in the cafeteria of the Max E. Muravnick Senior Citizens Center.

Society Queen Mother Flavia Gwara, who directed and organized the show, wore a white feather boa around her neck. She orchestrated the show behind the scenes as members entertained the crowd.

Welcome to the discussion.
