CHESHIRE - Police and community groups are tackling the problem of underage drinking in town from several sides, but some are concerned about the lack of widespread parental interest.

A youth and parent survey, released in October, gathered views and behavior concerning alcohol. Michelle Piccerillo, youth services director, said she hasn't had much reaction from parents since the survey came out.

"We have not had in this office a tremendous amount of response to survey results," she said. "We're focused on raising awareness about this issue with parents."

According to police Lieutenant Jay Markella, the department has been increasing its efforts on underage drinking recently.

One of the questions in the survey asked students how wrong it was for them to drink alcohol. According to the survey, 2.9 percent of middle school students said it would not be wrong at all, while the number increased to 14.1 percent of students for grades 9 and 10. Thirty percent of students in grades 11 and 12 thought it was not at all wrong for them to drink alcohol.

Welcome to the discussion.
