CHESHIRE - Republicans will take control of the Town Council in December with a 7-2 majority, and that takeover could have repercussions for the Library Advisory Board and its support for the inclusion of a book on the 2007 Petit killings.

The board voted 5 to 1 with one absence Monday in support of the Library Director Ramona Harten's decision to buy two copies of the book.

"In the Middle of the Night" by Brian McDonald is written mainly from the perspective of one of the suspected killers, Joshua Komisarjevsky.

An e-mail calling for a boycott of book sellers who carried the book was sent out by William Petit, Jr., the sole survivor of the attacks, and his family. Some, including board member Marilyn Bartoli, have also wanted the book kept out of the library as a show of support to Petit.

Harten has sole authority to buy material for the library and the board's vote was show of solidarity according to board chairwoman Carol DiPietro.

"The process has been followed," DiPietro said at the board meeting.

Four seats on the Democratically-controlled board will be up for renomination in January. Three of those seats are likely to be filled with Republicans, since at least two seats must go to the minority party.

Welcome to the discussion.
