WALLINGFORD - Nucor Steel Connecticut, a steel manufacturing plant on Toelles Road near Wharton Brook State Park and the North Haven town line, has filed an application to renew a permit so it can continue to discharge into the Quinnipiac River.

The plant, located at 35 Toelles Road, is currently permitted to discharge a maximum of 72,000 gallons of treated cooling water per day into the Quinnipiac River by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.

The proposed permit, if approved by the DEP, would require "that all wastewater be treated to meet the applicable effluent limitations and periodic monitoring to demonstrate that the discharge will not cause pollution."

A public legal notice for the permit renewal was posted Nov. 18, and the DEP sets a period of 30 days from the posting of the notice to accept written comments on the company's application before making a decision to approve or deny the permit.

Welcome to the discussion.
