Meriden man faces 10-year sentence in connection with Middlefield home invasion

MERIDEN — Former city resident Shane Leverette was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to ten years and six months in prison in connection with a 2011 Middlefield home invasion, according to a statement released by Deirdre M. Daly, acting U.S. Attorney.

Leverette, also known as Shane Baltas, was also sentenced to three years conditional discharge by Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven. He pleaded guilty on March 26 to illegally possessing a firearm and violating conditions of release, Daly said.

In Feb. 2011, Leverette and an accomplice entered a Middlefield residence intending to steal cash and narcotics, Daly said. .

While on the premises, Leverette seized an semi-automatic rifle, Daly said. He and his accomplice temporarily confined the home’s residents in a bedroom at gunpoint while demanding money and drugs, Daly said.

In the course of the incident, Leverette’s accomplice used his own handgun to strike one of the confined residents, causing the victim to sustain a head injury and the weapon to discharge, Daly said.

In Feb. 1999, Leverette was convicted in a Massachusetts federal court on gun, drugs, and racketeering charges. He got out of prison in 2007 and had one year left on a five-year conditional release at the time of the Middlefield home invasion, Daly said.

Leverette’s case was jointly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Connecticut state police, and the Middletown Police Department.
