Legion Post 45 in Meriden hosts new awards night

MERIDEN —American Legion Post 45 and its auxiliary groups will host an awards ceremony next month to honor five veterans that live in the city.

The Legion, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 45 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 45 are sponsoring a dinner to pay tribute to people who served in the military. After having joint meetings, City Councilor Bob Williams, a member of the American Legion, said the groups decided it would be fitting to honor people for the time they served.

“Usually we do something when there’s something that’s tragic,” Williams explained. “We thought people deserved to be honored for what they’ve done, especially the older people who served in World War II. These people fought for the freedom of the U.S. and something should be done for them.”

The joint group agreed to honor one person from recent wars and conflicts, Williams said.

The honorees will include Dick Egan, who served in World War II and is also the co-founder and president of the city’s Antique Veterans. Also being honored is city resident Frank Rodrigues, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, Joseph Luca, who served in Vietnam, Diane Larivee, who served in the invasions of Panama and Grenada, and city firefighter Kevin Muravnick, who served in the Iraq War.

“The outpouring of names has really been overwhelming,” Williams said. “We may actually create a formal committee to review them when we go about this for next year.”

Without having the first event yet, Williams said he and Becky Fede, who is helping to host the event, are excited about making the event a yearly tradition.

The ceremony will be held on Oct. 19 at the Villa Capri in Wallingford. The evening includes the ceremony, along with food, drinks, a silent auction and fundraising events, as well as dancing.
